Kangaroo are an incredibly abundant species, with the current population standing around 25 million. In fact, they are so abundant that in many areas, overpopulation of kangaroos is now reducing habitat quality for other native species.
High densities of kangaroos reduce vegetation cover, making small native animals more vulnerable to predation by foxes and cats. This little bloke doesn't get along well with kangaroos, or foxes.
To prevent this overpopulation, four species of kangaroo are harvested under strict management plans approved by the Australian government. To ensure this harvest is sustainable, the quota is adjusted each year so that if the population begins to decline, so to does the harvest quota. I was issued kangaroo skin boots in the Australian Army and can guarantee that the leather is tough and light. Pretty much scuff proof as well.
Haha that is excellent, and of course the Australian army would issue them. Thanks for the comment, Nathan! Has anybody thought about making rat wraps?
Went to NY once and there was some size 13s with xtra wide soles near the hotel climbing out of a drain! Just a thought of shoes there…. Great article! You should mention that according to the Higgs MSI, the environmental impact of K-leather is less on every single metric than vegan leather, and 5 times less that any other leather. Then there is that world where kangaroos were killed by spear for a meal or for their bones and skin by Aboriginals, and later, perhaps, they were hunted for similar reasons by the European settlers, who started using a new kind of weapon.
This might have made kangaroos wary of humans carrying spears, but they were entirely unprepared for a gun, and the hunting for fun or profit. But we can easily imagine the kind of horror that comes over a mob of kangaroos when a man with a gun approaches and starts killing them. To be inside when her mother is shot; to be grabbed by a rough hand and pulled out—well, there are no words to describe what the joey must feel.
In the moments of sheer terror, before a female kangaroo is killed, she embodies the indictment of our species, each and every time the act is committed for human gains. Please use a genuine email ID and provide your name. Economy Nike and Adidas are using kangaroo skin to make sneakers. Because kangaroos are cute, and cows aren't? Being opposed to kangaroo leather just because you live far from where they are common, because you have only seen them in zoos and think they are adorable, has nothing to do with the fact that billions of animals are killed for human use every year.
If you care, you should stop eating meat altogether, or only consume animals that you raise and kill yourself, or any other of a million ways you could genuinely help animals. Unless it turns out that the kangaroos are killed ONLY for their leather, I'm not any more opposed to this than I am other animals being killed and eaten and their skins used to make shoes.
If they are killed just for their skins, then this is just as bad as fur. I'm curious to find out, because it looks to me like this is a "save the cute animal while ignoring the real issue" kind of protest. The real issue here is the vast, environmentally destructive, and unhealthy overconsumption of meat in the first world, not using a byproduct of an animal that is going to be killed to make a burger anyway.
